Accelerated development and scale-upofanexothermic two-step process: In the face of short timelines,an opportunity was exploited to quickly develop and implement a flow process to mitigate potential safety and throughput challenges.

In the face of short timelines,an opportunity was exploited to quickly develop and implement a flow process to mitigate potential safety and throughput challenges. From an initial semi-batch process, a continuous flow process was developed within a few months on lab scale and accelerated through the scale-up process to deliver a campaign in ourpilot plant. The process comprises two highly exothermic steps and an unstable intermediate. Physical properties and mixing proved to be key factors for development. Ultimately the team were ableto deliver >500 KG of isolated product in less than one week. What began as a safety driven campaign also has potential to bring further benefits with respect to both selectivity/yieldand process intensification (solvent usage and waste).
